Welcome to Ellesmere College, Post-16. We have 80 students who we work with to prepare for adulthood by providing meaningful experiences, work-related learning and community engagement.
We are fortunate to have links with organisations in the community of Leicester. During time in Post 16 students will visit the local library at the Brite Centre, local cafes and the city centre to increase their confidence in accessing local destinations.
We have visits and workshops from Bikeability and London Philharmonia Orchestra and we run a very successful Eco club. Our desire is to help students identify passions and past times they can enjoy when they leave Ellesmere.
We also host visits from the DWP, Learning Disability Nurses and local PCSO to introduce them to people who can support them in the future.
Functional English, Maths and Employability skills are taught in methods appropriate to student needs. For a more detailed understanding of our curriculum in Post 16 please see the relevant pages.
Our school motto, ‘be your best, be happy, believe’ which was written by staff and students demonstrates our commitment to personalisation, emotional wellbeing and mental health. Our comprehensive intervention programme takes a holistic approach to learning, and supports students in areas such as communication, emotional wellbeing, confidence and developing self-regulation tools.
We provide a range of work experience opportunities which students can access on site or off site and as a class or individually, depending on their level of independence. Some students will join our DFN Project Search programme. This is a programme that supports young people with SEN into employment and we have partnered with University Hospitals of Leicester, Voco Hotel and Leicester University to make this happen.
We have now seen a number of young people from Ellesmere progress onto employment. Other students graduate from Ellesmere and following additional years at college progress to DFN Project Search programme when they are older.
We have positive relationships with our local colleges and Post 16 students will visit them a number of times during their time with us. In January every year we visit the fine dining Taste Restaurant at Leicester College where students enjoy a two course meal and hear about opportunities available there.
Our aim in Post 16 is to prepare students for a positive experience in adulthood so we offer all encompassing experience so they are confident to live as fulfilling and as independent a life as they can when they leave.
